While debates are still raging about the lawfulness of some cab booking apps, with a fierce opposition from traditional taxi drivers, the authorities of Casablanca-Settat region issued a statement on Tuesday, denying that Russian company “Yango” was authorized to run transportation services in the region.
The said authorities explained that the ride-hailing app is offering paid passenger transportation services without a license or prior authorization, in addition to using nonconforming cars and unprofessional drivers.
The statement warned that such practices violate legal provisions in force and put people’s safety at risk. It also reminded the company’s employees of administrative and legal sanctions awaiting them under rules and regulations governing the public transport sector.
According to market research firm “Sunergia”, only 4.5% of Moroccans use transportation application services. For Non-drivers, the rate increases to 10%.
As long as there is a legal loophole that was not closed, businesses such as Uber, Careem, Heetch, Yassir, Indrive, Votre chauffeur.ma, Pip Pip Yalah and Yango will continue operating in Morocco.
