Europe’s largest paper and packaging producer, Smurfit Kappa (SKG.I), announced on Tuesday the opening of its first corrugated cardboard packaging plant in Morocco, and on the African Continent overall. It will be located in the Ain Aouda industrial zone of Rabat.
The official inauguration is taking place today as we speak.
The new factory was funded with more than 35 million euros. Its production capacity is projected to be around 150 million packages annually, said Smurfit Kappa Spain, Portugal and Morocco CEO Ignacio Sevillano.
The plant will provide sustainable packaging solutions to local customers involved with a variety of businesses, including the industrial, agricultural, and automotive sectors.
The factory encompasses over 5 hectares, including 25,000 square meters zoned as developed area. The project will create 200 direct jobs and 400 indirect ones.
Although this is the company’s first factory in Morocco, it has maintained a sales office in Casablanca since 2018.
Smurfit Kappa owns over 350 factories worldwide in over 36 countries, with approximately 48,000 employees and a turnover of 13 billion euros in 2022.
