Even though preliminary forecasts indicated that watermelon quantities and sizes would not meet expectations due to unfavorable climatic conditions in most areas of the Kingdom, do not fret. Producers in Larache (North) and Gharb (West) are coming to the rescue with abundant harvests, with yields arriving from Zagora and other southern Moroccan regions, as well.
The Larache and Gharb areas have experienced a significant shift toward watermelon production this year, as well as record acreage due to the industry’s success last year.
Zniker Omar, owner and CEI of Souir Berry in Larache, stated that harvesting began this week and that the first export calendars would be ready in mid-July. The quality is great, and sizes of the melons are respectable, as well.
The grower claims that climate disruptions have resulted in smaller sizes than in previous seasons, but he guarantees that the sizes and quality we have this year will prove satisfactory.
The majority of the produce comprises watermelons weighing 14-18 kg, with lesser numbers weighing up to 20 kg. This is smaller than Moroccan customers are accustomed to, yet it is the typical size in Europe and in most Moroccan stores.
