German radio station “BR24” reported recently the existence of terrorist groups in Africa, especially in the Polisario-run camps in Tindouf (Algerian territory). The article highlighted the ease with which organizations like IS and al-Qaeda function inside these camps, using internet-based propaganda and different recruitment methods.
It underscored the growing concerns that such groups might be laying the groundwork for organizing attacks against Europe.
Islamist groups are dominating Africa and targeting refugee camps, according to authors Sabrina Wolf and Joseph Rohel, who stressed the importance of understanding and combating these groups in Africa.
Ismail, a 38-year-old Polisario supporter, was recently imprisoned over extremism charges, after his involvement in a network supporting the Islamic State’s ideology was proved.
According to Spanish media, Ismail, also known as Monni Ahmed Merhaba, was making daily calls to jihad and martyrdom via self-created content posted on numerous mobile applications.
He had proclaimed his support for the Islamic State as well as his dislike for Spain.
Spanish investigators discovered connections between Ismail and other IS sympathizers, including Abu Walid, an IS former leader and Polisario member. Additionally, there is a network of Polisario members in Tindouf camps involved in IS activities in the Sahara and Sahel.
Spanish authorities had investigated Ismail’s extended network, and revealed links to Syria, Spain, and Algeria’s Tindouf camps. Communication among the members is done mostly through secret Facebook accounts and Telegram.
