A recent report published by UAE-based Energy Platform “Attaqa” ranked Morocco among the top five solar power-generating countries in the Middle East and North Africa until January 2023.
Morocco produces around 740 MW of solar electricity, and is ranked fifth in the list. The United Arab Emirates topped the rankings with a total of 2,899 MW, followed by Egypt (2,048 MW), Jordan (1,048 MW), and Qatar (815 MW).
The same source expected that Morocco’s ranking among other Arab countries will improve in the future thanks to the mega solar energy projects under way in the country.
The report noted that the Kingdom had stepped up its efforts in the area of renewable energy in recent years, to reach a share of 52% of its renewables-based electricity by 2030.
Hydropower is Morocco’s main source of clean energy, accounting for 16.7 percent of the generated electricity.
The source warned that 66 out of Africa’s 87 hydroelectric power plants need renovation and maintenance, with 30 requiring immediate intervention.
