The domestic tourism industry in 2022 registered a recovery rate of 84%; that is to say, 11 million more tourists visited Morocco compared to 2019 (Pre-Covid period), announced Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social Solidarity and Economy Fatim-Zahra Ammor on Thursday in Rabat.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Relations with Parliament, the Minister highlighted that these data represent a “significant” accomplishment when compared to the global average indicating an estimated 63% recovery.
“This surge has resulted in record revenue from tourism in foreign currency of nearly 94 billion dirhams, up 19% relative to 2019,” she noted.
Ammor stated that tourism in Morocco is showing a very positive trend, which is reflected in the achievements recorded since 2022. She added, “Since the beginning of 2023, the sector had embarked on a rapid expansion dynamic, allowing it to surpass the achievements of 2019, which is considered a benchmark year.”
As reported by Ammor, 5.1 million tourists visited Morocco between January and May of this year, a 20% increase over the same period last year. These arrivals generated around 41 billion MAD in foreign currency profits, a 42% increase over the same period in 2019.
In 2022 and 2023, Morocco made significant progress in tourism promotion and engineering, including the launch of the “Morocco, Land of Light” campaign targeting 20 strategic markets and partnerships with travel operators and digital travel agencies.
Tourism investments reached 8.9 million MAD in 2022, clearly signaling worldwide confidence in the Kingdom as a tourist destination. One hundred nine accommodations were inaugurated, encompassing almost ten thousand hotel stays.
Promotion and investment are the main leverages of the 2023-2026 tourism roadmap, foci of which include professional skill development of the labor force, facilities renovation, and promotion of each individual destination as a premier entertainment venue.
