Morocco registered a decline in its global peace ranking, falling ten places in the 2023 Global Peace Index (GPI) released, by the Institute for Economics and Peace, recently. Morocco now ranks 84th globally (75th in 2022), 7th out of 20 in the MENA region, and 2nd in North Africa with a rating of 2.02 out of 5.
The country’s overall peace score has fallen, suggesting that it is turning less peaceful. Local and international conflicts, societal safety, militarization, and the financial consequences of violence are all determining factors contributing to the overall ranking.
The study also points to a shift in the global distribution of conflicts, with fewer major conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and South Asia.
Morocco rated 1.9 for conflicts, 2.2 for societal safety, and 1.6 for militarism in the sub-indices.
Despite increases in peace levels during 2016, the MENA region remained the least serene region overall.
The center of terrorism has repositioned from the Middle East to Sub-Saharan Africa, in particular centering on the Sahel. Conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region have intensified, reflecting a shifting panorama of conflict areas.
The Global Peace Index amalgamates a variety of measures to evaluate peace levels in gauging societal security, militarization, and frequency and severity of ongoing conflicts.
