Casablanca, Morocco’s economic hub, will be getting its supply of fresh and potable water from two future seawater desalination plants in the port cities of Safi and El Jadida. Minister of equipment and Water Nizat Baraka revealed Wednesday that a MoU was signed in this regard to relieve the pressure on the Al Massira dam.
The signatories are the government and OCP, and the planned projects are forecast to benefit even regions adjacent to Casablanca. The agreement is of the utmost importance as it will help support drought-affected areas.
OCP Group is working on desalination projects to bring drinking water at affordable prices.
Chairman of OCP Green Water Board Abdelaziz El Mallah said the accord aims to remedy the acute shortage of water to meet the needs of populations in Safi and El Jadida, as well as the needs of the Group’s chemical plants in Safi and Jorf Lasfar.
Cutting-edge technologies will be used in seawater desalination and green energy production, at a very competitive cost, he added.
The government decided in February 2022 to elaborate an additional program to ease the pressure on the Oum Er-Rbia water basin and avoid water supply disruption in the region. A strategic partnership was established with OCP for the sustainable mobilization of water resources through seawater desalination.
