French President Emmanuel Macron is mulling over placing financial sanctions on families in response to the recent nights of rioting in Paris. The proposal emerged during a meeting with law enforcement officials on Monday evening, as reported by international media.
Macron pointed out the need to first identify the individuals and then penalize their families, in reference to any interaction with police and gendarmery agents which resulted in an infraction of the law.
He advocated for a “minimum fee” on any act such misconduct. Despite the apparent return to relative normalcy, Macron alerted police to be watchful, adding that the crisis has not yet been extinguished.
Macron was in the midst of making his first field visit since the murder of the 17-year-old Nahel during a police altercation, which prompted the ensuing protests.
The President–along with Interior Minister Darmanin–visited the Bessières barracks in the 17th arrondissement of Paris to thank night staff and departmental intervention companies for their recent mobilization and assurances of their support. Macron and Darmanin aimed to express their gratitude and to reciprocate their support, in turn.
