Brazilian authorities reported Monday that football superstar Neymar was fined 16 million reais (the equivalent of 35 million MAD) for violating environmental regulations relating to the construction of his seaside mansion in the southeastern part of his country.
The project contravened rules pertaining to the use and movement of groundwater supplies–along with that of rock and sand–the authorities alleged back in June and subsequently confirmed earlier this week.
The environmental council of the town of Mangaratiba in Rio de Janeiro state, in which the dwelling is situated, said in a statement on Monday that environmental infractions were committed “in the construction of an artificial lake at the mansion.”
In addition to the fine for this rogue act of blatant disregard for environmental and procedural integrity, the case will be probed by the local attorney general’s office, the state civil police, and the environmental protection bureau, as well as other environmental control entities as relevant and appropriate.
