Police issued authorization for a rally outside a mosque in Stockholm on Wednesday to shred and burn the Quran, an event that risks infuriating Turkey as Sweden seeks to join NATO.
While Swedish police have recently rejected multiple petitions for suppression of anti-Quran demonstrations, judges have overturned those judgments, claiming they violate free expression.
Police said only two people were expected to take part.
Recent protests in Sweden against Islam–and additionally in support of Kurdish rights–have enraged Turkey, whose support Sweden requires in order to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Sweden had requested NATO membership following the commencement of Russia-Ukraine Conflict last year.
However, Ankara has stymied the process by accusing Sweden of harboring terrorists and–to no avail– has demanded their extradition.
Turkey is the only country that’s putting the chokehold on Stockholm’s accession to NATO, primarily because of the Kurdish refugees it protects. However, the decision by Swedish courts to uphold the legality of desecrating the Quran has not helped matters.
