Iran has been extending and consolidating its influence into a new continent in recent years: Africa, particularly the Sahel, and the Maghreb, according to English-speaking news outlet “The Defense Post“.
Iran has been equipping and training rebel Shiite groups in nations including Senegal, the Central African Republic, and Nigeria through the extrapolation of its Middle East strategy.
By doing this, Iran is establishing a presence in a strategically important and resource-rich region that is close to important Western shipping routes in the Atlantic Ocean.
The Sahara region of northwest Africa could be the area where Iranian subversion has the most geopolitical repercussions. Additionally, Iran tries to undermine a steadfast Western ally, that acts as a cornerstone of stability in a volatile neighborhood, by increasing its support for state and non-state opponents of Morocco.
Morocco’s permanent representative to the United Nations Omar Hilale had shed light on the drone transfer via Algeria and warned that Morocco will react in an “appropriate manner.”
However, Iranian subversion reaches deeper inside Morocco through its persistent campaign to radicalize and recruit disaffected members of the Kingdom’s Shiite minority.
Morocco’s fast-growing economy and deep economic ties with its fellow African countries make it a strategic nexus between the US/Europe and the entire African continent.
