Second man on Spain’s left-wing SUMAR list Agustin Santos Maraver told Spanish News Agency EFE that it is highly unlikely that Spain does a U-turn on its position on the Sahara, all the more so because the United Nations remains the exclusive framework for the resolution of the conflict.
Maraver, a former Spanish ambassador to the UN, believes, contrary to his party’s position, hat a referendum in the Sahara is unrealistic because the current Sahrawi demography has changed from what it was in 1974.
He recalled that SUMAR has urged a ceasefire twice, and the request was on both occasions directed to the polisario, not Morocco.
He also referred to Morocco as a strategic partner with which Spain can share a space of co-prosperity.
Santos said that a left-wing administration in Spain must support modernization and democracy in Morocco, deeming reports of alleged human rights violations in the Kingdom as “individual cases.”
Leader of the left-wing coalition “Sumar”, Yolanda Díaz’s choice of Maravir as her runner-up, known for his support for the territorial integrity of Morocco, has created a polemic in Tindouf, and for polisario’s supporters.
