The Moroccan authorities have foiled, over the past five years, around 366,000 attempts of irregular migration to Europe. According to data released by the Interior Ministry, this figure reached 70,781 for the year 2022 and 25,519 by the end of May 2023.
The numbers also show that in the last five years, 90,000 migrants were rescued from drowning in sea. 12,478 migrants were saved from the perils of sailing the sea and adverse weather conditions in 2022, compared to 3,150 by the end of May 2023.
About 290 migrant smuggling rings were smashed in 2022, and another 117 by the end of May 2023, bringing the total number of similar networks dismantled over the past five years to 1,500.
Regarding the storming into the occupied enclaves of Sebta and Melilla, the Ministry said one hundred attempts were thwarted by the Moroccan authorities in five years, involving approximately 17,500 individuals.
According to the same source, 16 attempts to jump over the cities’ fences were initiated in 2022, compared to just one attempt in the last five months of 2023, owing to the tightening of anti-illegal migration measures.
