Russian President Vladimir Putin said, in a televised address on Saturday, following Head of Wagner Paramilitary group Yevgeny Prigozhin promise to “go all the way” to topple Russia’s military leadership, that he will not allow an internal betrayal that would undermine the country and its people, reported Russian news agency “TASS”.
“We will defend both our people and our statehood against any threats, including internal betrayal. What we have been confronted with can be precisely called treachery,” said the Russian head of state.
He, nevertheless, admitted that Wagner group had fought and died side by side with other military formations and units. These sacrifices for the Nation of Russia are now tarnished by the betrayal of those who are trying to stage a mutiny to push the country towards anarchy and fratricide, Putin affirmed.
The strife between Wagner owner and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was triggered following a rocket attack ordered, on Friday, by the Russian top official on Wagner’s field in Ukraine.
Prigozhin posted Saturday an audio message on social media app Telegram saying that his forces had taken control of military facilities in the city of Rostov-on-Don, the headquarters of Russia’s military in the East.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) described Prigozhin’s act as a call to start an armed civil war on the Russian Federation territory, and, as a consequence, anti-terrorism measures have been deployed in Moscow.
