A dinghy sailing from Agadir and carrying over 60 passengers sank off the coast of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Around 30 migrants are believed to have died in the tragedy.
Two migration-centered NGOs, “Walking Borders” and “Alarm Phone”, commented on the horrible incident and emphasized Spain’s obligation to lead the rescue operation inside its search-and-rescue territory, reported international media.
This is an addition to another boat that has recently sank off the coast of Greece, calling for close scrutiny of Europe’s approach to the migration problem. Helena Maleno Garzon from “Walking Borders” stated that 39 people perished, including four women and a baby, while “Alarm Phone” voiced concerns over the 35 people who went missing.
The actual number of passengers or victims is still unknown, as authorities in Spain have not yet provided official information. Migrant rights advocates have accused Spain for failing to assist the would-be migrants even if the boat was navigating its waters.
