Moroccan Abderrahman Tlemçani was elected, Thursday in New York, as member of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), during the 30th meeting of States Parties to the said UN body.
Tlemçani got 153 votes out of 181 by CERD member states.
This election, the first for the Kingdom, demonstrates the legitimacy and trust in Morocco’s efforts to promote and preserve human rights, notably in the fight against discrimination.
Morocco has made significant efforts to combat racial discrimination and hate speech both nationally and internationally, as evidenced by the 2011 Constitution and the proclamation of June 18 as the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, at Morocco’s initiative.
This latest election success, against the backdrop of intense competition, is the result of an all-out mobilization by the Moroccan diplomatic representation.
