The asteroid 33903 was officially named after Moroccan researcher Youssef Moulane, during the Asteroids, Comets, Meteors (ACM) conference that took place on June 18-23 in Flagstaff (Arizona), the scientist announced on his Facebook account.
The celestial body was discovered on May 20, 2020, and it measures around 18 km, said the researcher.
The 14th edition of the ACM meeting is a venue for exploring and debating the topics related to asteroids, comets, meteors, and trans-neptunian objects, among other things.
During this flagship event, the International Astronomical Union has named over 300 new asteroids after scientists and academics in honor of their contributions to the small-body system.
Youssef Moulane, 31, from a small village near Marrakech, obtained his Bachelor’s degree in physics, and a master’s degree in high energy physics and astrophysics. He did his PhD at both Cadi Ayyad University and the University of Liege.
