Despite recent advances in various domains, Morocco is still facing social concerns regarding gender mainstreaming as it was ranked 136th out of 146 countries by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in its 2023 “Global Gender Gap Report”.
With a combined gender difference of 62.6%, the Middle East and North Africa remain the least equal regions. The kingdom was placed eleventh among North African and Middle Eastern countries, trailed by Oman and Algeria.
The report assesses the evolution of gender disparities in four areas: work participation, access to finance, education and skills, healthcare, and political emancipation. It also investigates the impact of recent global economic downturns on the gender wage gap in the labor market.
In “Economic Participation and Opportunity”, Morocco was ranked 141st, moving two additional spots from the year 2022 (139th). For the category of “Educational Attainment”, the country held the 115th position, up one spot from a year ago. Concerning “Health and Survival”, Morocco is currently ranked 130th instead of 131st in 2022. Finally, on the “Political Empowerment” factor, the Kingdom gained 9 points and was ranked 90th worldwide.
According to World Economic Forum experts, it will take 131 years to close the global gender gap. Ireland remains, for the 14th year in a row, the most equal country in the world, having eliminated more than 90% of the gender gap.
