Rescue teams are actively searching for a submersible vessel that was investigating the Titanic’s debris, before vanishing into the Atlantic. Battling challenging sea conditions, Canadian maritime surveillance aircraft has detected banging sounds every 30 minutes with no positive results, according to US coastguard officer Captain Jamie Frederick, quoted by several media outlets.
The search operation involves OceanGate Expeditions, the US coastguard, US navy, Canadian military, and coastguard to locate the vessel with five individuals on board, which has 40 hours of oxygen left.
The voyage began from St. John’s in Newfoundland and has covered 20,000 square kilometers since Sunday. Top professionals in the country are involved in the unified command.
The US Coast Guard revealed in a tweet the detection of underwater noises in the search area of the missing Titanic submersible. Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) were relocated to investigate the cause.
The Titanic crew is believed to be British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani-born businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son, French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and American Stockton Rush, founder and CEO of OceanGate Expeditions.
