Morocco has chosen to abandon preparations to host the second Negev Forum ministerial meeting next month in reaction to the Israeli move to massively expand settlements in the West Bank, reported The Times of Israel on Wednesday.
The meeting by foreign ministers of Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, Egypt, and the United States was originally scheduled for March but has been postponed repeatedly due to mounting tension between Israelis and Palestinians.
Rabat decided last week to finally convene the summit next month. The date had not been set, but it was “pretty locked up” for mid-July.
However, Israeli settlement developments on Sunday stalled the process once more.
The Netanyahu cabinet passed, on Sunday morning, a resolution that gives Smotrich, a settler and passionate supporter of the nationalist movement, virtually complete power over West Bank settlements.
Israeli efforts to strengthen its presence in the West Bank are also seen as a barrier to additional Middle East normalization treaties, especially with Saudi Arabia.
