OCP, one of the world’s largest phosphates and fertilizer firms, intends to invest 7Bln Dollars in an ammonia factory utilizing green hydrogen generated from renewable fuel, according to reuters.
The state-run OCP is one of the largest ammonia importers, spending 2Bln Dollars on raw material last year as the Ukraine conflict was driving up costs worldwide.
To address supply issues, OCP has agreed to purchase ammonia from North America this year.
On the long run, it plans to strengthen its local supply chain, including the construction of a facility in Tarfaya (southern Morocco) that will generate 200,000 tons of ammonia per year by 2026, expanding to 1 million tons by 2027 and 3 million tons by 2032.
OCP has stated that it intends to rely solely on desalinated water for industrial activities by 2027, and it would launch tenders early next year to enhance desalination capacity at Safi and Jorf Lasfar on the Atlantic.
Its Tarfaya project includes a desalination plant fueled by renewable energy with a capacity of 60 million cubic meters per year to supplu industrial enterprises.
