The World Bank Board of Executives approved a US $450 million Program-for-Results loan to assist the Moroccan government in carrying out a major healthcare reform with the goal of enhancing the availability of high-quality public health services to everyone, announced the WB on Monday.
In a press statement, the organization pointed out that Morocco has begun implementing “one of the most ambitious and comprehensive healthcare system reforms in the world, showing its commitment to building human capital.”
The initiative supports an overhaul of the supply-side healthcare system to improve health outcomes and quality of service delivery, based on the bank’s long history in the sector.
The World Bank’s aid is expected to make the support system more inclusive by expanding coverage, improving healthcare services, reinforcing the healthcare workforce, and improving governance, added the Bank.
In the words of Jesko Hentschel, World Bank Country Director for the Maghreb and Malta, inclusive socioeconomic growth and human capital accumulation are critical for enhancing access to quality healthcare for all. This loan will establish the framework for a healthcare system that measures and improves access to and quality of care for all.
The Bretton Woods Institution emphasizes that its project in Morocco will improve healthcare service delivery and patient experience, and that it will reinforce the foundations of a high-quality healthcare system, resulting in improved health outcomes and economic benefits. It will also focus on climate vulnerability, gender equity, and citizen participation.
