Leader of Movement of the Enterprises of France (MEDEF) Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux’s visit to Morocco on June 26 was postponed by the president of the Moroccan Employers Association (CGEM) Chakib Alj, according to RFI.
It seems that political tensions between the two countries have contaminated economic ties, as well.
When the visit was announced last week, the Medef declared, “We do not engage in politics.” Yet, in reality, if business links between France and Morocco had previously evaded the diplomatic squabbles between the two nations, the issue is now bordering on the insurmountable.
According to CGEM, the cancellation is due to “the current context of Morocco-France relations, which does not lend itself to this visit.”
In this case, we observe an unusually blunt manner of indicating that cordiality between the two nations does not presently exist, which had already been the case with respect to diplomatic and political events, but that has now apparently overspread the commerce sector, as well.
Morocco has been without an ambassador to Paris for some months now, and there are multiple signals of Moroccan dissatisfaction with France’s political agenda.
France’s effort to shore up ties with Algeria–in particular its unfavorable attitude on the Moroccan Sahara issue–has proven to be the most acute crisis leading to soured relations.
