127,000 Moroccan children out of 7,690,000 aged between 7 and 17, were already in the labor market in 2022, according to a report by the Statistics and Forecasts Office (HCP), issued on World Day Against Child Labor.
104K of underage children are working in rural areas, while 23,000 are involved in trades in urban areas, added the same source.
Children in this age group are mostly males (81.5%) and live in rural areas (82%). 12.2% of them are schooled, 85.3% are dropouts and 2.5% never attended schools.
Yet, the numbers decreased by 14% compared to the 2021 report, and by 48.8% compared to the 2017 report, a fact that shows a decreasing tendency.
Young laborers in rural areas are working in the agricultural sector (76.5%), while those living in urban zones are active in the services sector (56.3%), and the industry sector (24.7%).
60.5% of these kids are practicing hazardous jobs, mainly in industry.
Child labor is widespread especially in large households, composed of more than 6 persons.
