It started with Donald J. Trump–on the campaign trail and on camera–blatantly mocking a journalist with cerebral palsy, a congenital muscular disease resulting in impaired coordination and speech. It has now transformed itself into apparent acceptability in some political and journalistic circles in the Developing world. What are we talking about?
“Political autism” is a completely fabricated, nonsensical, and contradictory term invented by some politicians and journalists to weaponize their contempt for their enemy–in their machination to achieve a desired result–while demonstrating their condescension toward the most vulnerable segment of society.
Before one jumps to the conclusion that this is some holier-than-thou diatribe advocating that we all adhere to the conversational straightjacket of universal political correctness, be advised of the recent position taken in this very space warning of the dangers of woke thinking.
This issue has nothing to do with political correctness; rather, it has to do with so-called professionals–supposedly at the pinnacle of their fields–using wildly inarticulate, inaccurate, and illogical verbiage which denigrates the very individuals with whom their governments have engaged in a social contract to protect.
The term “autism”–one of approximately thirteen disabilities typically covered under special education (S.E.N.) laws which afford educational benefits to relevant youth afflicted–can be defined as, “A neurodevelopmental condition characterized by difficulty with social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repeated patterns of thought and behavior.”
Normalizing the belittlement of those least capable in society of controlling their own destiny is nothing short of demonic. Politicians and journalists who do so are lazy, ignorant, and inarticulate in their words, and in this day and age have been (and should continue to be) laughed right off the stage of credibility in international forums of discussion and multilateral relations such as the United Nations.
Tiptoe around the truth? Absolutely not; there is an obvious need in today’s world for millions–if not billions–of people to reconcile themselves with reality and “call a spade a spade.” However, it is imperative to simply be accurate about that reality, and to have enough respect for one’s self, one’s profession–and humankind in general–to not throw under the bus an entire segment of society that is completely irrelevant to any and all references to political matters.
