A Russian man fell victim to a tiger shark on Thursday after it attacked him off the coast of the Red Sea near the Egyptian resort city of Hurghada, said The Guardian, based on both Russian and Egyptian authorities’ reports.
The Russian consulate in Hurghada did not reveal the deceased’s name, but according to Tass News Agency, he was born in 1999 and was a permanent resident of Egypt.
Authorities declared a 46-mile (74-km) section of the shoreline off-limits until Sunday and then closed it completely.
The shark was captured, according to the environmental ministry of Egypt, and is being investigated in a lab in an attempt to understand the causes of the unusual behavior.
In the Red Sea’s coastal zones, shark attacks are rare. However, two ladies – an Austrian and a Romanian – died in shark attacks in Hurghada in 2022, only days apart from one another.
