Ahead of the vote by the Special Committee on foreign interference in all democratic processes in the European Union, including disinformation, and the strengthening of integrity, transparency and accountability in the European Parliament, the speakers of the Moroccan parliament’s two houses, Rachid Talbi El Alami and Enaam Mayara, stressed the unique partnership between Morocco and EU, which compels the latter to show the Kingdom courtesy.
The bill on “foreign interference in all democratic processes in the European Union including disinformation”, was established on May 15, 2023, following the European Parliament resolution regarding Pegasus Affairs.
The Moroccan officials underlined in their letter to the European body “the common will to ensure, in all circumstances, the continuation of dialogue between our law-making institutions, in the interest of the strategic partnership between Morocco and the EU.”
This bill will be put to a vote at the European Parliament’s next plenary session. The document, if enacted, will harm any favorable possibilities between the two institutions, based on its inquisitorial nature and unfriendly suggestions, warned the two speakers.
Talbi El Alami and Mayara emphasized that Morocco and the EU member states are pioneering collaborative initiatives, both bilaterally and multilaterally. “It is our responsibility to do everything in our power to preserve them.”
They concluded by saying that the Moroccan parliament is ready to discuss future steps and welcomes encouraging signs of cooperation.
