Tensions have escalated between Morocco and Spain as the two nations are having a face-off over a territorial dispute. Spain has formally complained to Morocco after the kingdom declared Sebta and Melilla Moroccan cities in a communication to the European Commission. This move has somehow strained the previously harmonious relationship between the two countries, as reported by Spanish media.
Spain’s government delivered a diplomatic note to Morocco, firmly rejecting the language used to refer to the two enclaves in the communication sent to Brussels on May 17th. Spanish newspaper “El Pais” reported that Morocco’s claim was met with strong disapproval in Madrid, as it violated the commitment between the two governments to avoid actions that could offend either party.
This clash was triggered by comments made by Greece’s Margaritis Schinas, Vice President of the European Commission in charge of immigration. Morocco protested against Schinas’ repeated assertions that Sebta and Melilla constitute “the border of Spain and of the European Union.” The dispute underscores the need for diplomatic dialogue to find a resolution and restore amicable relations between Morocco and Spain.
