Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Aykhan Hajizade, has raised concerns over French President Emmanuel Macron’s unilateral statement regarding the recent meeting between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Chisinau, Moldova. The meeting, attended by European Union Council President Charles Michel, Macron, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, aimed to address the ongoing conflict between the two nations.
Hajizade argued that Macron’s statement does not accurately reflect the position of both parties and fails to contribute positively to the peace process in the region.
During the meeting in Chisinau, both Michel and Macron issued statements to the press, discussing the desired outcomes of the discussions. However, Hajizade emphasized that Michel, as the organizer of the Brussels format, traditionally releases press releases on behalf of the meeting’s participants.
He expressed disappointment with Macron’s independent statement, stating that it misrepresents the positions of Azerbaijan and Armenia.
This is not the first instance of France’s behavior being criticized for its handling of the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict. Hajizade stated that such actions do not contribute constructively to the peace process, and that they undermine efforts to establish and maintain regional stability.
