Marrakech, arguably the most vibrant Moroccan city, is set to revolutionize its transportation system with the introduction of 20 electric buses, following in the footsteps of Rabat, which successfully tested the “Ecitaro” by Mercedes Benz in 2022. The initiative is being made possible through a collaborative effort with the South Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), ensuring a greener future for the city.
Yongwoo Jeong, Director of KOICA, and Samir Goudar, President of the Marrakech-Safi Regional Council, have signed an agreement to develop an ambitious plan to deploy environmentally friendly buses and implement digital solutions throughout the city.
The buses–manufactured in and exported from South Korea–are part of the government’s broader strategy to encourage the transition to electric vehicles. With financial support of 11.7 million euros (equivalent to 127.6 billion MAD), it encompasses the development of an intelligent transportation system, ensuring efficient and optimized operations for the urban environment of the city of a million-plus residents.
