Algerian opponent and political activist Karim Tabbou is charged with four felonies, namely disrespecting the president, insulting law enforcement officers, insulting a statutory body and spreading news that could undermine national security and public order.
The multiple counts of charges were made during a TV show in which Tabbou appeared alongside former Tunisian president Moncef Marzouki.
Tabbou was detained by agents wearing civilian clothes, on May 23rd in Algiers, and no explanations were given to his family at that time.
Tabbou was taken to Kolea court on May 25th without informing his lawyer or family and was subsequently brought before the public prosecutor, who charged him and required to place him under judicial supervision. This kind of supervision would prevent him from participating in political assemblies and press seminars, or leaving the country.
The lawyers drew attention to several legal flaws tarnishing the case, especially the fact that Tabbou’s arrest was illegal, as it occurred 16 days after the TV program, and no family member was informed of his exact location.
