The Forsatin Forum reported on Sunday that a Sahrawi detainee, who was in good health, perished in suspicious conditions inside an Algerian jail.
According to the whistleblower, the victim’s family is holding polisario leaders responsible for the tragedy, adding that such repeated happenings are no news to Algeria.
The situation is really alarming as the detention conditions of Algerian prisons are miserable, and Sahrawis suffer from ill-treatment and abuse that can lead to death.
Dozens of Sahrawis lost their lives following interventions by Algerian authorities in gold-drilling sites. Some were even burnt and dumped into pits, it recalled.
Sahrawis are used to be randomly arrested in Algerian towns, airports, and checkpoints. They are brutalized and abused if they do not know a polisario leader who can intervene on their behalf and get them released.
Others are arrested because of their political positions, opposition to the polisario leadership, or documenting scandals inside the camps. Forced disappearance is another weapon used against the Sahrawis to silence them.
