Morocco expressed its full solidarity with brotherly Sudan in these difficult times, and its readiness to provide the necessary support to help it overcome this crisis, said Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on Saturday.
This came in a meeting, via video conference, of the African Union Peace and Security Council, held at the level of Heads of State and Government, on the situation in Sudan.
Bourita said that Morocco, which has deeply-rooted fraternal ties with Sudan, trusts the wisdom of the Sudanese people to reach a compromise that would strengthen the foundations of a political process to preserve the security and stability of their country and meet their development needs.
For Morocco, the first key to a political solution lies in building mutual trust between the parties and initiating a fruitful dialogue to achieve a lasting peace that guarantees Sudan’s security, stability, and prosperity.
In this vein, the kingdom expressed its satisfaction with the ceasefire agreement of May 20, 2023, as well as with the commendable actions taken by the conflicting parties at the Jeddah meetings, with Saudi and American mediation, to facilitate the supply of relief aid to the Sudanese people.
The Minister made the proposition to dispatch a mission, as soon as possible, from the Peace and Security Council to Sudan to take part in discussions with the Sudanese parties with the aim of resolving this crisis.
The tripartite mechanism, which includes the United Nations, the African Union, and the IGAD, is still committed to making peace in Sudan a reality, said Bourita.
Regarding the emergency de-escalation plan in Sudan, the Minister said that Morocco considers this plan as the basis for resolving the crisis while taking into account of the contribution of the KSA, the USA and the Jeddah process.
Morocco also warned against foreign meddling in the internal affairs of Sudan that would trigger an escalation of the conflict and pose a threat to regional peace and security.
