Feature films “Les Meutes” by Moroccan director Kamal Lazraq and “Kadib Abyad” (The Mother of all lies) by Asmae El Moudir won the Jury’s Prize and the Directing Prize, respectively, in the “Un Certain Regard” selection of the 76th Cannes Film Festival, said the international Festival in a press release Friday.
For “Kadid Abyad”, it relates the story of a young woman’s quest for truth which tangles with a web of lies in her family’s history. The movie touches on the Bread Riots and draws out connections to contemporary Morocco.
As for “Les Meutes”, it recounts the daily life of a father and a son who carry out small trafficking jobs for the local mafia.
The “Un Certain Regard” 2023 selection included 20 feature films, 8 of which are first features also competing for the Caméra d’Or.
The Jury was chaired by American actor John C. Reilly. It included French director and screenwriter Alice Winocour, German actress Paula Beer, French-Cambodian director and producer Davy Chou, and Belgian actress Émilie Dequenne.
This year’s edition opened with Thomas Cailley’s “Le Règne Animal”, and ended on a high note with the screening of Alex Lutz’s film “Une nuit”.
