Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita reaffirmed, Monday in Rabat, Morocco’s principled position on the Ukraine crisis, based on respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all UN member states.
In a press conference with Ukrainian peer Dmytro Kuleba, who is on a working visit to the Kingdom, Bourita went on to say that the Moroccan stand is also based on the non-use of violence to solve disputes, and respect for UNSC resolutions and UNGA charter in relation to the conflict in Ukraine.
The Moroccan top official clarified that Morocco is not a party to the conflict in Ukraine; however, it does feel its economic repercussions and impact on regional stability.
“Morocco has good relations with Russia as well as with Ukraine, and it calls for a peaceful solution to this issue,” said Bourita, adding that the kingdom welcomes all initiatives to find a pacific solution to this crisis, but having too many initiatives on the table is itself unconstructive.
This visit is a great beginning to strengthen bilateral ties in a variety of domains such as the economy, security, trade, and education; especially since thousands of Moroccans chose Ukrainian universities to pursue their higher education, said Bourita.
He added that he discussed with his Ukrainian counterpart the possibility of resumption of diplomatic and consular activities in Kyiv.
As for Kuleba, he said the Kingdom is a gateway for Ukraine to Africa, voicing the will to consolidate bilateral ties via visa and trade facilitations.
He also made the promise to find solutions for Moroccan students whose studies were interrupted because of the conflict.
Kuliba thanked Morocco for its position at the UN in favor of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and, in this regard, he expressed, for the 1st time, the Ukrainian position over the Sahara by supporting the “autonomy plan” and considered it a credible and realistic solution to the dispute.
He concluded by presenting the MoU on the diplomatic academy signed by the two states.
