A vehement opponent of Tunisian President Kais Saied, Rached Ghannouchi was sentenced, Monday, to one year in prison, according to his attorney Monia Bouali.
81-year-old Ghannouchi has been imprisoned since April. The allegations, according to his attorney, are related to a eulogy he made to a member of his Ennahda party last year, in which he stated that only God should be feared, not a ruler or tyrant.
The leader of the Islamist Ennahda party is also accused of plotting against state security, along with other imprisoned activists. The opponents accuse Saied of mounting a coup by dissolving the elected parliament and trying to rule by decree.
Saied, who cemented his new powers in a constitution ratified in a low-turnout referendum last year, asserts that his acts were necessary to preserve Tunisia from years of chaos.
