Trade between the two nations has effectuated 100 million dollars in value; however, that number does not approximate the true scope of possibilities that can be realized, according to the head of Israel’s diplomatic mission in Rabat, Shay Cohen, who spoke recently to i24News. He emphasized that the need to boost trade is a necessity.
The Abraham Accords, which went into effect three years ago, have allowed the two countries to strengthen their ties on several levels, particularly with respect to collaborative security enhancements.
Cohen elaborated that Morocco and Israel are threatened by Iranian aggression and by terrorism in general and that while the two countries do indeed currently partner to counter this threat, they must go further in their joint efforts.
Cohen added that the Accords also evoked opportunities for cooperation and development of agricultural research and innovation.
The two countries are presently co-chairing one of the working groups of the Negev Forum. As the section is dedicated to issues relating to food security, desertification, global warming, and water shortage, this represents a golden opportunity to collaborate in tackling these challenges.
The Israeli official added that Morocco is his country’s bridge to the African continent.
Cohen concluded in eliciting the historical ties which bind the two nations together–specifically that a full 10% of the Israeli population contains Moroccan origin–along with the cultural domain with which it influences its neighbor across the Mediterranean Sea.
