European Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe Dunja Mijatovic called, on Wednesday, for radical changes in Spain’s role in immigration management in North Africa, particularly with respect to the occupied enclaves of Sebta and Melilla.
Specifically, it asked Spain to suspend cooperation with Morocco on border control in the wake of the Melilla mass fence-jumping incident of last June 24, which resulted in 23 grisly fatalities.
Mijatovic insisted that Spanish authorities must act to demand that law enforcement officials maintain acceptable comportment in compliance with internationally recognized human rights standards in the detention of migrants at border crossings, as reported today by Spanish news agency “EFE”.
