President of the French Republican Party Eric Ciotti said, Thursday, that Morocco’s sovereignty over Sahara is unquestionable, adding that this matter requires urgent attention from France.
This came in a meeting of Ciotti, who is on an official visit to Morocco, with Head of Government and secretary general of National Rally of Independents (RNI) party Aziz Akhannouch.
The French politician also called to fix France’s errors and the lack of respect shown to Morocco, stressing the importance of maintaining strong ties between Rabat and Paris.
Additionally, Ciotti praised the major role that Morocco plays on the African continent and in the Maghreb region, especially in the regulation of migration flows.
Ciotti expressed his party’s desire to establish a partnership with the RNI.
The Moroccan-France ties have been a bit tense lately due to the European country’s rigid position over the Sahara which did not evolve over the years.
The Monarch had said, in his speech dated August 20, 2022, that “the Sahara issue is the lens through which Morocco looks at the world. It is the clear, simple benchmark whereby Morocco measures the sincerity of friendships and the efficiency of partnerships.”
Yet, France, which used to be a strong ally of Morocco, did not shift its stance and chose, few months ago, to halve the visas granted to Moroccan nationals, under the pretext that the Kingdom is reluctant to bring back its citizens who immigrated illegally to France.
