New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy proclaimed January to be Islamic Heritage Month in honor of the contributions of the state’s Muslim community, in a move described by many as “historic.”
American media quoted prominent Muslim inhabitants of the state who lauded the action, as the largest Muslim community in the United States resides here.

“As a state with the highest proportion of Muslims in the country, we are very happy to have a month that values and celebrates our community in a positive light, and we hope that this recognition will increase Muslim participation in society,” Zint Syed, of Muslims America for Democracy, told the media.
Approximately five million Muslims were living in the United States in 2022, according to the U.S. Council on Islamic Relations (CARE), while statistics from the nonpartisan Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) placed the figure between three and four million. This is equivalent to about 1.1% of the U.S. population of 330 million citizens.
