The Moroccan music industry is in mourning Wednesday following the death of Moulay Tahar Al Asbahani, a Jil Jilala’s band pioneer. The artist died on Wednesday at the age of 75.
The musical group’s founder was admired not only for his vocal range, but also for his tremendously agile command of notes in traditional Moroccan songs, as well as for his sense of humor.
The artist was an innovator in merging music and theatrical art, having previously worked with the late Tayeb Saddiki in the latter part of the 1960s, while also starring in various film and television productions.
Jil Jilala is credited with a number of works that have highlighted a wide range of Morocco’s diverse artistic heritage in a manner that has been highly receptive to Moroccans and Arabs worldwide.
