After much ado, the National Institute of Archaeology and Heritage Sciences announced that it was finally able to locate a much sought-after, pre-Islamic tombstone of Amazigh origin. However, the artifact was found to be in Settat, not in El Jadida as previously thought.
A team from the Institute, including professors Abdelaziz Alkhayari and Mohammed Salou–along with director of the Center for Studies and Research on Moroccan-Lusitanian Heritage, Abu Alqasim Shabri–was sent to the site to follow up on the ongoing investigation.
After pinpointing the precise location, the tombstone was transported to a secure site for study and documentation. The Institute has promised to share the results of its findings with the public as soon as they become available.
The tombstone, engraved with Tifinagh letters, has been the subject of much speculation and interest upon its discovery in early February.
