Israel has for the third time since March conducted air raids which resulted in the closure of Aleppo International Airport, as reported by several news outlets through UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). These strikes also resulted in damage to the Al-Nayrab military airbase in the same region.
Aleppo is Syria’s largest city, with over two million inhabitants.
The assault earlier today on the civilian air facility by Israel–occurring with the purported intent of disrupting pro-Iranian militias supplying weapons to Syria and Lebanon–resulted in the death of one soldier and in injuries to seven other persons, including two civilians.
Israeli missiles fell on factories producing defense materials, resulting in explosions and significant property damage.
Israel–which has promised to stop Iranian entrenchment in neighboring countries–though Aleppo is situated over 600 km from its northern border–has carried out hundreds of attacks on government-controlled parts of Syria, but rarely acknowledges them. On Saturday, air raids in the Homs region resulted in injuries to three civilians.
Since the catastrophic earthquake of February 6 of this year resulting in over 6,000 Syrian deaths, Aleppo International Airport has played a key role in the flow of humanitarian aid into the nation. The disruption of supplies to the region has had obvious implications for recovery efforts.
