Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone conference with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday for the first time since the commencement of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict, according to Reuters.
Zelensky, who described the hour-long phone discussion as “long and meaningful,” signaled his awareness of the opportunity to strengthen ties with Russia’s most powerful ally.
During the conversation, Ukraine’s President slated a former cabinet minister to be the nation’s next ambassador to Beijing.
He noted that, “Ukraine and China, like the absolute majority of the world, are equally interested in the strength of the sovereignty of nations and territorial integrity.”
Xi informed Zelensky that China will send special representatives to Ukraine to hold discussions with all peace-seeking groups.
“The Kremlin said on Thursday it welcomed anything that could bring the end of the Ukraine conflict closer when asked what it thought of a phone call a day earlier between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky,” reported Reuters.
