The civil battery and defamation trial involving columnist E. Jean Carroll against former President Donald Trump began Tuesday, local news outlets reported.
Trump was sued by Carroll for allegedly assaulting her in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s, a charge the former president has denied.
“The whole attack lasted just a few minutes, but it would stay with her forever,” lawyer Shawn G. Crowley said in an opening statement in a trial at a Federal District Court.
If Carroll wins the lawsuit, it would be the first time the former president – who has been the subject of more than two dozen such allegations – would be found legally responsible for a sexual assault.
Trump has called the allegations “a con job,” a “hoax” and “a complete scam,” which led Carroll to sue him for defamation.
US Former President was recently indicted over hush money payments to ex-adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
