Morocco’s military expenditure totaled $5 billion, like it did a year earlier, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reported.
North African countries were 3.2% lower than 2021, but still 11% higher than 2013.
SIPRI report noted that Morocco and Algeria accounted for 74% of military spending in the sub-region, that is to say almost $19.1 Bln. The ongoing territorial dispute between the two countries over the Sahara is still impacting their military spending policies.
The total military spending of African countries in 2022 reached $39.4 billion with a 5.3% decrease from 2021 and 6.4% from 2013.
The U.S., China, and Russia remain the top three countries with the highest military expenditures, accounting for 56% of the total, added the report.
The global military spending in 2022 reached a record high of $2,240 billion, a 3.7% rise from the previous year.
