French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire vowed to act against those who send active solidarity income (RSA) aid to their home countries.
The official asserted that migrants were “abusing France’s welfare system” and committing fraud.
In a country where the social system is challenged, mainly after the pension reform controversy, politicians are seeking other ways to appease the situation and focusing on welfare fraud, a long-time favorite subject of the Right.
They avail themselves of a rhetoric commonly used by opponents of “assistance,” a derogatory phrase used to refer to “jobless” persons who rely on government support.
“The French are quite rightly fed up with this fraud. They’re sick and tired of seeing people eligible for benefits (…) sending the money to North Africa or elsewhere”, said Le Maire.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin had suggested that a distinction should be made between recipients who deserve support and those who do not.
