Saudi Arabia is striving, through official diplomatic channels, to talk Morocco into accepting the return of Syria to the Arab League.
The Saudi Foreign Minister had a phone call with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita over the weekend, during which they discussed bilateral relations and topics of shared interest, including Syria’s return to the Arab fold, as per media reports.
Saudi Arabia provided Morocco with guarantees that Syria will stop supporting the Polisario, given that the latter joined hands with the Iranian regime and Hezbollah in making subversive plans aimed at undermining the security and stability of Morocco.
Observers believe that Saudi Arabia is trying to bring back Bashar al-Assad into the Arab League, as a result of major regional changes that followed a China-brokered deal it signed with Iran last month.
The return of Syria to the Arab League is not approved by all member states, especially since the reasons for excluding Syria are still standing.
American newspaper “The Wall Street Journal” reported that, besides Morocco, at least five members of the Arab League are refusing to readmit Syria into the grouping, including Kuwait, Qatar, and Yemen
