Cereals import reached 8.8Mln tons (MT) in 2022, posting a 23.2% year-on-year rise, according to the National Ports Agency (ANP).
The activity is concentrated in the port of Casablanca with a volume of 4.7 MT, representing about 53.6% of global grain traffic (an increase of 10.3%), added the same source.
Imports of cereals in other ports have also posted more or less important variations, namely Jorf Lasfar (+48.2%), Agadir (+32.9%), Nador (+32.9%), and Safi (+44.3%).
The evolution of these imports is due in particular to climate change that resulted in a sharp 67% decline of the national production of major cereals (soft wheat, durum wheat, and barley) that did not exceed 34 Mln quintals.
The report highlighted that phosphate exports and derivatives have reached a volume of 27.9 MT, down 20.5%. This figure is mainly the result of the negative evolution of exports of fertilizers (-16.6%), raw phosphate (-42.7%), and imports of sulfur (-8.4%) and sulfuric acid (-39.8%).
